Our Society has completed many projects and held some very successful events in the past, and here are just a few.

MacDougall Park Bridge

The dry stone bridge in MacDougall Park is a wonderful feature of the village of Russell. The Russell and District Horticultural Society worked with Cindy and Scott Cluett from Beyond the House to design and organize the build of this stunning bridge in the summer of 2009. This project was a true community effort. The Lion's Club helped with funds and many, many volunteers helped in so many different ways.

This beautiful bridge has now become one of the most photographed spots in our township!

Over the years, RDHS has maintained and improved MacDougall Park. Today we continue the work of keeping this beautiful park looking it's best!

Children's Reading Garden at the Russell Library

With help from Beyond the House and support from the Township of Russell, RDHS installed a Children's Reading Garden at the Russell Branch of the library. Fun and learning were the goals. Children and adults alike love the garden and look forward to spending time reading and exploring this wonderful spot.

RDHS also installed a lovely flower bed and trees at the front of the Russell Branch of the library to greet you when you visit.

Living Locally Fair

The very first Living Locally Fair was held in 2009, in partnership with St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School. The Living Locally Fair was a one-day event held in early January and featured local artisans, producers and community groups. Right from the start, this was a wildly popular event that attracted people from a wide area to visit the vendor stalls and have a lunch of homemade soups and chili cooked and served by our own members. The 12th and final year of this event was in January 2020. It was a huge success, with 102 exhibitors and an estimated 4,500 attendees.

Serenity Garden at

the Russell Meadows

Prior to March 2020, when COVID-19 restricted access, we held our meetings at Russell Meadows Retirement Community at 475 Church Street in Russell. In 2018 in thanks for the use of this wonderful facility, RDHS installed the Serenity Garden for residents to enjoy.
